Today I officially stopped work on a side project I’ve been maintaining for the past five years, The Kollection.
The Kollection started in 2010 as a simple blog where my friends and I could curate music. But we poured our hearts into that thing for five years. We wrote thousands — yes, thousands — of posts, and we were able to share music with more than 3 million people around the world. It opened doors I would have never imagined: backstage passes, meeting some of my favorite artists (interviewing Macklemore and Ryan Lewis remains one of the most special nights of my life), selling apparel to fans around the world…man, what a ride.
But momentum turns into burden. The long nights fighting fires, trying to keep the wheels turning. The next exciting project tugs at your shirt. And pretty soon you follow that tug towards the Next Fun Thing™.
Five years of work and love and all I got was this stupid 301 redirect.
The internet quickly moves on. But it’s a sad thing that five years of passion and effort and frustration and joy can all just get wiped away with the click of a button.
It’s time to take what I’ve learned and move on to bigger and better things. Spec, Design Details, my blog…these are all things I love and hope to work on for many years to come. Love your side projects.
